“If you remain united to your Father through prayer, you can do everything” (Inner Word).
What a wonderful invitation! It reminds us of St. Paul’s exhortation to pray without ceasing: “Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” (Eph 6:18).
Sacred Scripture exhorts us time and again to persevering prayer, and the saints and masters of the spiritual life never tire of speaking of its importance.
For our Father, it is a wonderful way to carry out His work alongside us. But it is not always about extraordinary works; rather, union with our Father can become so intimate that everything we do is imbued with His light.
On one occasion, the Lord tenderly addressed these words to St. Matilda of Hackeborn: “Wherever you are, there is My heaven; whether you eat, sleep, or do anything else, My dwelling is always in you.”
We can assume that such an intimate union with our Father will make it very easy for us to recognize His will. We need only ask Him openly, and then God will let us know if we are on the path that is pleasing to Him (cf. Ps 139:24).
Furthermore, union with our Father will impel us to move forward courageously, without fearing the future or the situations that may arise, and not to retreat when we must stand firm and face adversity. The Father will take care to consolidate within us those gifts of the Spirit that we need for our lives and for the particular situation in which we find ourselves.
But these gifts will not be activated only for a specific moment; rather, if we follow His promptings, they will remain alive permanently and will be constantly at our disposal. This will be a source of joy not only for us but also for our Heavenly Father, who will delight in seeing that His presence becomes natural to us and guides each of our steps.
