217th Meditation
“The only reason to be afraid to surrender your whole life to God is to believe that your own project is better” (Esther Maria Magnis).
The author of this sentence describes very well what might prevent us from abandoning ourselves completely to our Heavenly Father. Indeed, there can be no reason, neither of our understanding nor of faith and love, that could discourage us from entrusting ourselves to our loving Father. What, then, makes us hesitate to follow His invitation, as befits love and truth?
It may be that deep within us there remains the idea that we know best where to find our true happiness. It is as if – often unconsciously – we still place conditions on God, under which we would give ourselves completely to Him. This idea gives rise to illusions, dreams and expectations that our Father would first have to fulfil us, so to speak, before we put ourselves entirely in His hands.
But this is an illusion, which makes us keep the reins of our life in our own hands, believing that ultimately we know best the way we should go. Certainly these ideas are often unconsciously conceived, but they are nonetheless a profound obstacle to leaping into the freedom of total surrender to our Father.
To overcome them, it is first necessary to know God much better, as our Father invites us to do in the Message to Mother Eugenia Ravasio: “Approach the spring which will gush for ever from My fatherly Breast (…). The spring is the symbol of My knowledge; the ocean is that of My charity and of your trust”.
And He goes on to say, “When you wish to drink from this spring, study Me in order to know Me and, when you know Me, dive into the ocean of My charity, trusting in Me with a confidence so deep as to transform yourselves: this I shall be unable to resist.”
Then, if we perceive that in the depths of our being there is still a reserve to give ourselves completely to God, let us ask our Father to give us the grace to know Him better and thus overcome all barriers through His love.
If we do so with sincerity, we will soon experience that the Father’s strong and patient love is able to melt our hearts, dispel illusions and move us to seek our happiness in Him alone.
