“No one in the whole world can change the truth. We can do only one thing: seek it, find it, and serve it.” (St. Maximilian Kolbe)
This profoundly true statement by St. Maximilian Kolbe is meant to lead us into an attitude of humble simplicity. It shows us the path on which we can live our lives fruitfully and in union with God. For this we were created, and for this our Father has placed the longing for truth within our hearts.
The Son of God Himself told us in unmistakable words that He is the truth (John 14:6). This truth also lies deep within us. When we discover it, our soul breathes freely and knows it has found a safe path. When the soul truly encounters the Lord—and has not known Him since childhood—the moment of definitive decision has arrived. The soul will say: It is You! You are the One I have always sought!
St. Augustine expresses this encounter with Love in his own way: “Late have I loved You, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new; late have I loved You!”
Once the truth is found, it becomes natural to serve it as one would serve a sovereign. All ignorance, insincerity, deception, error, or even lies must give way, for all of these “swallow up” the clear light of truth. Truth, on the other hand, makes our being upright and clear. The twisted turns and hiding places of self‑love—so ready to deceive us—are penetrated and dissolve. They can no longer stand in the light of truth.
Just as it will be when we one day stand before God and no questions remain, so the truth we serve already now desires to establish its throne within us.
The truth is God Himself—our beloved Father.
