“THE LOVING GAZE”

“Look at Me, just as I look at you!” (Inner Word)

This is our Heavenly Father’s loving invitation to walk a path of intimacy through this earthly life. What tenderness we encounter in these words! The Father’s gaze upon us humans is filled with caring love for our physical and spiritual needs. God’s love always precedes us, for He had already looked upon us before we were in our mother’s womb:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you” (Jer 1:5).

His love accompanies us day by day, and our Father looks upon each of us with such care, as if we were His only child whom He does not wish to lose.

We look up to our Father and pray with the psalmist:

“Thy eyes beheld my unformed substance; in thy book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Ps 139:16)

Under Your loving gaze, Father, we continue on our way and thank You for the gift of life and for Your incomparable wisdom. It watches over my steps—always ready to correct and instruct me, to strengthen and guide me.

We look upon You with love, beloved Father, marveling at how You guide our lives and how patient You are with us humans. We always know that we can come to You when we lift up the eyes of our hearts. Then Your gaze has already rested upon us and made us understand that You love us and accompany us on our way, just as You accompanied Your Son.

What else can happen? Actually, nothing—we must simply never lose sight of You and, like Your Son, should always look to You.
