“I, I am he that comforts you” (Isaiah 51:12a)
How deeply our Father longs for us to understand this. Who else could give us comfort that reaches into that depth which neither we nor any other human being can fathom?
Will we not stand face to face in the hour of our death—He and I? Will not all the light be there then, allowing us to see everything through the eyes of God? Will it not be an infinite comfort when we can say to our Father: We have trusted in You, sought Your comfort, and tried to follow Your ways? The sight of our Father will be our comfort. We will realize how much He has loved us and that He has never forsaken us.
The Heavenly Father wants us to experience this comfort even now—the comfort of the certainty of His love, especially when life, in whatever way, shakes us to the core.
We will learn that every comfort we seek for ourselves leaves our soul empty, while every waiting on the Lord draws us closer to Him.
Part of God’s jealous love is that the Father wants to comfort us Himself—not because He would deny us any other comfort. Our Father knows, however, that only He can comfort us in such a way that our soul emerges healed and strengthened after every encounter with Him. It is therefore His love that grants us the best and desires to give it to us Himself, so that we do not seek comfort elsewhere.
The entire verse from Isaiah reads: “I, I am he that comforts you; who are you that you are afraid of man who dies, of the son of man who is made like grass?” (Isaiah 51:12)
