“OUR EFFORT TO LISTEN TO THE SPIRIT”

“It takes your effort and attention to heed the promptings of the Spirit.” (Inner Word)

Yesterday we reflected on a word from Sister Faustina, which taught us that chatter and distractions make it difficult for the Holy Spirit to reach us. Today’s word may serve as a first addition to that.

The Holy Spirit wants to speak to us because He is our spiritual teacher. Let us remember that the Lord’s disciples had to wait for His descent before they could begin their mission to all nations. It is He who empowers us to do so.

How do we act and speak? Are we primarily guided by our own thoughts? Do we limit ourselves to reason alone? Or do we allow ourselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit?

It is only through His work that our deeds take on a supernatural character. If we strive for this, we must get to know the Holy Spirit. One way to do so is to ask for His guidance and His presence. Furthermore, we must be vigilant to avoid doing or saying anything that might contradict Him. We will notice this easily, for the Holy Spirit will let us know and correct us inwardly if we ask Him to.

In addition, we should set aside time in silence for Him and faithfully practice our religious devotions, especially the reading of Sacred Scripture.

We should also learn to wait on Him in certain matters and situations, just as the disciples did in Jerusalem, until we receive enlightenment from Him—provided there are no objective circumstances that require us to act.

We can pray frequently, “Come, Holy Spirit,” making this a prayer from the heart. It is also important that we thank our spiritual director when he has given us his light. There is much more that puts us in the right frame of mind to better understand the Holy Spirit and to become ready for His work.
