“But when I pour out My grace upon people and receive it back from them, I prepare in My divine heart the honey of eternal sweetness.” (Words of Jesus to Saint Mechthild of Hackeborn)
Time and again, a loving soul may ask itself how it can repay its Lord for all that He grants it in His lavish goodness. And yet it remains true: “How could I ever thank You enough for all Your goodness?” We will always fall short of what God gives us. And that is just as well, for He gives in a divine way, and we remember that He is the source from which love flows.
Yet it is not as though we have nothing to offer God—nothing in which He might delight or through which He might receive our love. The sentence above from St. Mechthild’s “The Book of Special Grace” gives us a deep insight into the heart of the Savior. When we receive the Lord’s grace—and by that we mean His love—and respond to it, this becomes sweet food for the Lord’s heart. So we can bring joy to our God every day, for His prevenient grace is already there when we awaken.
It is the Spirit of Piety—one of the seven gifts of the Spirit—that becomes active within us when we feel moved to ask how we can please our Heavenly Father.
Jesus tells us this very lovingly through St. Mechthild.
Our response of love to our Savior is never lost, but remains forever as love in His divine heart. In eternity, we will surely be able to see how our response of love was a sweet joy for the Lord. And that will make us very happy.
