“HOLY KINSHIP”

“Everyone can become brothers and sisters if they believe in Me.” (Inner Word)

This refers to the kinship our Lord speaks of in the Gospel:

“Some one told him, ‘Your mother and your brethren are standing outside, asking to speak to you’. But he replied to the man who told him, ‘Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?’ And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brethren! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.’” (Mt 12:47–50)

This kinship has a different quality than blood relations and is not limited to the earthly dimension. It is that innermost bond that springs from love for God. For this reason, it also includes the angels and saints in heaven, as well as those who are still in the place of purification, for they too love God and await their union with Him.

This must be distinguished from efforts that seek to proclaim a general brotherhood of humanity without the essential conditions for it. Such efforts are even misleading, because they overlook the fact that humanity exists in a fallen state.

Yet our Father does not abandon people to this hopeless condition. Instead, He offers them His closeness and His fatherhood through His Son. To accept this means stepping toward those who live as His children. It means being surrounded by brothers and sisters whose greatest joy is that we belong to them. It means finding a home in the spiritual family of the redeemed, a family given to us by our Father. All are called into this family, and there is more than enough room—if God’s invitation is accepted.
