“GREAT THINGS AWAIT”

“I tell you in truth, it pleases Me greatly when people trustingly expect great things from Me.” (Word of the Lord to Mechthild of Hackeborn)

This word of Jesus to Saint Mechthild of Hackeborn refers not only to our journey through this earthly life. Of course, it also applies here, where we may ask the Lord to do “great things” on earth through us. Our Father will gladly let us do “great things,” though we may not always know what is truly great in the Lord’s eyes. Yet we can say: Everything we do out of love, with Him in mind, is great, and the so‑called “little things” will be measured by the weight of our love.

The Lord, however, meant something else as well—something far‑reaching—for He says:

“Whoever believes in Me that I will reward him beyond his merit after this life, and who praises and gives thanks to Me accordingly in this life, shall be so welcome to Me that I will reward him far more than he can believe or dare to hope, indeed infinitely beyond his merit.”

That, dear Lord, is truly a great invitation and, for me, an outstanding prospect. Until now, I have always hoped and prayed that I might do as much as possible for You, so that the work of my life might stand before You in Your mercy. But You think so infinitely further than I do. It surely gives You special joy to surpass us again and again with Your generosity—so much so that we cannot even guess or imagine it on our own. That, dear Lord, can move us deeply and kindle our love for You eternally.

You know, dear Lord, it would be best if we listened to You again tomorrow to hear what You went on to say to Saint Mechthild. We are eager to hear it!
