“Don’t focus so much on your weaknesses and limitations, but on Me, who has called you and holds on to you, come what may.” (Inner Word)
On our journey of discipleship, this word serves as an important guide. Sometimes, when we become aware of our weaknesses and limitations, our courage may waver. It is not easy to bear our own inadequacies. It then becomes difficult to draw strength from within, and we may even feel paralyzed.
However, we must fix our gaze on our Father and remind ourselves that God has called us and will do everything necessary to safely lead us on the path to eternity. That is what sustains us when we feel deeply inadequate. At the same time, this helps us shift the focus of our lives because, whether we are too self-assured or too insecure, both tie us to ourselves.
Turning our gaze to our Father, on the other hand, gives us the calm assurance that comes from His love. We live because He is there, because He has given us life, and because His love for us never ceases. God holds on to us. His love never wavers or abandons us, even when we find it hard to bear ourselves.
In this way, our lives are transformed, and our Father accepts our gaze upon Him. We are less and less the center of attention because God has taken that place and now guides our steps. Our weaknesses and limitations may not all have been overcome, but they do not constantly set us back, and they have even been put to use by the Father’s wisdom to help us look more to Him than to ourselves.
