MY TRUST WILL NEVER BE SHAKEN

270th Meditation

“Though an army pitch camp against me, my heart will not fear, though war break out against me, my trust will never be shaken” (Ps 26:3).

This attitude of tranquillity is different from a merely human optimism. The latter is rooted in human nature; whereas the tranquillity spoken of here is the result of having placed one’s trust in the Lord, who in due time puts an end to wars and protects His own.

Trust has a conquering character. Even in the midst of war and misery, it already sees the victory which is sure to come. The person of faith does not allow himself to be disturbed by the fierceness of the struggle or by the apparent impossibility of a situation to the point of losing hope.

This trust unites us intimately with the Father, who takes great pleasure in our trusting Him in the most difficult situations. In a way, our Father could be proud of us if we cling to Him and firmly await His intervention. Even if from our point of view it seems to be delayed, the trust remains immutably placed in God. The Lord will guide events, the Lord will judge situations, the Lord will bring everything to a successful conclusion.

It is undoubtedly our Father Himself who brings about this attitude of trust in us. It is not something that can be achieved in the first instance with the will; it is a fruit of faith, to which we then adhere with the will. Trust cannot be defeated. Grounded in the Lord, it is invincible. It leaves behind its natural limitations and rests entirely on the Lord. How could the Father withdraw from such confidence?
