LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING

328th Meditation

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” (Prov 3:5).

How easily we tend to seek our security in ourselves or in passing things! Especially if we are intellectually gifted, we believe that we can overcome everything with human intelligence. Yet this is a great folly.

Indeed, the deepest dimensions of existence cannot be grasped by human intelligence. That is why true wisdom and intelligence consist in not relying on it, but in attributing to it only the sphere that is within its competence and in which it can unfold its value.

Trusting in the Lord with all one’s heart is something else. This is why the Proverbs in Sacred Scripture exhort us again and again to lean wholly on God. To take this step, the overvalued intelligence can even be an obstacle, because it does not want to give up the supposed security it offers us.

But if we give up this insecure ground of our own “I” and surrender our whole existence to the Father, relying on Him alone, then we enter into the bright light of wisdom.

We become aware of the loving reality that surrounds us. Our “I” diminishes, while God’s “You” grows. And as this “You” grows in our life, our life becomes more abundant, more graceful, more supernatural, more secure and more full of love.

Then the heart will have found its place: it belongs to the Father. In Him it finds its home and remains forever.
