“Do not seek comfort in people. What comfort could they give you? Go to the tabernacle and pour out your heart there. There you will find comfort.” (Saint Padre Pio)
Where do we seek comfort? Often in people; sometimes also in material goods or irrational creatures. Yet time and again we experience that we do not receive true comfort, for this can only come from the Holy Spirit. If we turn to the Lord, will He deny us His comfort?
The Lord waits for us in the tabernacle. He is always ready to give us what truly helps. Perhaps not all the problems we present to Him will be resolved immediately, but He will give us the strength to face them without being overwhelmed—or simply to take the next step.
But when do we really turn to Him? Don’t we first resort to all kinds of options to find inner peace? Yet who could truly give it to us? No matter how good and sincere people are, they will never know our soul with the depth that only the Creator can.
Jesus, hidden in the tabernacle, knows our soul well. He loves it when we confide in Him what we carry inside. He is not bothered when we show Him our frequent helplessness and ask for His help. In fact, this can help us grow in humility, and then we will know with certainty that it was He who helped us. And may we never forget it again!
Beyond concrete help, the soul will perceive how much good the Eucharistic presence of the Lord does for it and will awaken in it the desire to remain with Him more often. Then we will no longer turn to Him only when we have a specific need, but as our love grows, we will enter into a more intimate relationship with the Lord who awaits us in the tabernacle.
Let us follow Padre Pio’s advice, and we will see that the Lord will give us the comfort that only He can give.
