“Our bliss lies not in the deeds we do, but in the greatness of love” (John Tauler).
The mystics constantly remind us of the essence of our faith. Of course, it is not a question of devaluing good works, because they accompany us:
I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord henceforth.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” (Rev 14:13).
In its essence, everything our Heavenly Father accomplishes flows from His infinite love. Without this, we would never understand God’s motivation for creating, redeeming and sanctifying us, nor would we be sufficiently inflamed by this love. The central question for us, then, is how we can grow in love and make it a spring that waters the human world, which often seems so dry and barren. So, how can we love more?
If God Himself is the source of all love, the question answers itself. As we read in the Father’s Message to Sister Eugenia Ravasio, we must first know God better, seek His closeness, live in interior dialogue with Him, let His love enter us and contemplate it. When God’s love grows in us, we will pass it on to others and it will nourish every work we do. At the same time, the growth of love for God will be for us the beginning of happiness in this earthly life. The greater it is, the more it will become an everlasting joy and consolation for us.
