“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Mt 6:10).
To do the Father’s holy Will was the food of our Lord Jesus Christ (Jn 4:34). With these words Jesus expresses the joy and naturalness with which He fulfilled the Will of the One who sent Him. This was his life!
It was even so in the dark hours of His agony in Gethsemane, when His soul was “sorrowful even unto death” (Mt 26:38). But the Son of God never questioned the fulfilment of the Father’s Will: “Not as I will, but as you will” (v. 39). And later He says to Peter: “Shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?” (Jn 18:11)
We too must learn to accept God’s Will, even in the dark hours of our lives, when we are not immediately able to see the goodness and wisdom of His plans, but must simply trust our Father with faith. This will be an act of great love!
But how often can we simply rejoice, give thanks and praise our Father’s will as it is done in heaven! With what joy do the holy angels fulfil His Will: willingly, completely and immediately!
This food is also for them, because the knowledge and fulfilment of God’s Will enlightens them and unites all those who already contemplate Him face to face and love Him unconditionally.
Here we find the true fraternity which we call the Church triumphant. In heaven she is spotless and perfect. We join her when we do the Will of our Father on earth. This makes us true brothers of the angels and saints.
Therefore, when we sincerely pray for the fulfilment of God’s Will on earth as in heaven, we are nourished with the same spiritual food as our Lord. In this way, the peace that only God can give can enter our hearts and spread throughout the earth.
