THE WATER OF ETERNAL LIFE

Beloved Father, how gently Your Son guided the woman at Jacob’s well to the knowledge of the truth, so that she could recognize Him as the Messiah and become His witness to many other Samaritans. This is how You often proceed: You find someone who opens their heart to You, someone to whom You can grant Your light and make Yourself known, so that they can then carry the message to others. They too must learn that the One whom all who want to live in truth long for is truly there, waiting for them.

In this way, these people become bearers of living water, as Your Son said: “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (Jn 4:14).

But who, after receiving the water of life, would not want to tell others where to find it? Would they let them die of thirst in the desert? No, they could not and would not want to deprive them of this joy. The living water that Your Son offers us springs from Your Heart. It is divine love. And this love never closes in on itself or becomes self‑sufficient, but wants to give itself, wants to be shared, wants to make itself known so that all people may experience this love, and is even willing to suffer for it.

Thus, beloved Father, You offer the water of salvation to all people. Everyone can drink freely from this fountain. The Samaritans, although they wanted to worship You, did not yet know the true path that You have laid out for mankind. Today, many people are in the same situation. They are still searching, and in their religion they cannot find what You have prepared for them. They must encounter Your Son and ask themselves: “Is this not the One I have always been waiting for? Is it You?”

You will answer them, and then they will be able to drink the water of salvation and tell others where its source is.
