THE VIRGINAL CHASTITY OF TRUTH

“It is better to die at this time than to obey any order that would violate the virginal chastity of truth” (St. Hilary of Poitiers).

Today’s quote comes from an eloquent bishop who courageously defended the holy faith during the Arian crisis, and it applies to all of us who desire to follow the One who is “the way, the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6).

It is worth giving one’s life for the truth, and therefore for our Heavenly Father. This can happen in various ways, and it is always an act of great love that bears witness to the fact that God is more important than our life: “For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Mt 16:25).

At that time, St. Hilary defended the truth before the emperor and other bishops who were in error. But is it not necessary to defend it in our own day as well?

Many politicians follow agendas contrary to God’s commandments. Unfortunately, even today we see bishops in error, even in the highest echelons of the ecclesiastical hierarchy.

Therefore, we must defend the truth of Christian doctrine and morality so that the virginal chastity of the Bride of Christ is not violated. One may even give one’s life for this, for the truth stands above those authorities whose directives do not conform to God’s will.

St. Hilary’s firm affirmation should accompany us in our time, reminding us that faith can withstand moments of crisis. Without a doubt, our Father will provide us with everything we need to remain faithful during trials of our faith. Yet one thing must remain clear: we must live and defend the truth, even if it costs us our lives.
