“If only My people would turn, if only they would seek Me with all their heart and return to Me, how I would welcome them and shower them with blessings!” (Inner Word)
This is a lament and a cry from the Heart of our Father, who longs for His children so that He can pour out all His love upon them. Why can’t God simply be content with us, satisfied that His sons and daughters serve Him with joy? Certainly, the problem cannot lie with Him.
It is we, human beings, who remain foolish and seek our happiness in the wrong ways. Often we do not even understand what true happiness is, even though deep down we long for it. We do not know our Heavenly Father well enough and therefore are unable to perceive the love He wants to share with us. When we attach our hearts to created things—things that do not lead us directly to God—they become a false treasure that binds us to fleeting happiness. Then it becomes very difficult for our Father to reach our hearts. This is what the history of the people of Israel shows us again and again.
What can our Father do in such circumstances? He does not force us to love Him, because love requires freedom. What does He do then?
He seeks us and waits for us; He gives us signs of His closeness. He speaks to us and gives us proof of His love. He uses every possible means to reach us and call us to leave behind the wrong paths.
Today’s phrase shows us what is happening in the Father’s Heart, and it is the hope that He will not give up on His desire for our hearts to return to Him—to the true treasure that cannot be destroyed. It assures us that God never ceases to call us to encounter Him and that He has everything prepared to welcome us and fill us with blessings.
We only have to come, and it will happen.
