THE TRUE LAMP

“Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps 119:105).

Our Father never leaves us without guidance. Sometimes it may seem that the Lord does not listen to our prayers and petitions. But if we reflect more deeply, we will see that God has indeed already spoken His word about our personal situation and even about the reality of this world. We just need to discover it, and then our eyes will be opened and we will be able to continue on our way. The Word of God is true and we will never go astray if it dwells in us and has become a lamp to our feet.

When Jesus came into the world, the Word became flesh (cf. Jn 1:14).

There can be no greater concretization of the Word here on earth. When we meet Jesus, we meet the light of the world (Jn 8:12); and He, whom the Father sent in His love, becomes the criterion for everything we do, think and say.

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him”, says the voice of the Father to the disciples on Mount Tabor. And the Apostle Peter bears witness: “We heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Pt 1:18-19).

Let us add the words which the Virgin Mary addressed to the servants at Cana and which she extends to all those who wish to follow the Lord: “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5).

Can our loving Father give us a greater gift than to come to us Himself in the person of His Son? When we receive the Son, the words He spoke to His disciples become reality: “You are the light of the world (…). Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Mt 5:14, 16).
