THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE HEART

“Ecce enim veritatem dilexisti (Thou desirest truth in the inward being)” (Ps 51:6).

We know the words of the prophet Jeremiah about the twisted heart: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it? ‘I the Lord search the mind and try the heart, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings’” (Jer 17:9).

Jesus expresses the condition of the human heart even more clearly: “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man” (Mk 7:21-23).

The verse from Psalm 50 that we heard at the beginning counters the description of our heart’s negativity. Our Father wants a sincere heart that turns to Him—a pure heart that tolerates no falsehood; a heart molded after His own; a heart of flesh, not stone, which He gives us (cf. Ezek. 36:26); a truthful heart.

By God’s grace, our heart can become a temple of the Most Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit will then purify and enlighten it. Sincerity will enter our heart, and it will not tolerate any deceit. All evil originating from within cannot withstand the light of God. The inner temple is being cleansed. The more this happens, the more our heart will long to live in sincerity. It will no longer want to remain in the shadows or seek its own interests. It will no longer want to appear to be what it is not.

With love, our Father has set His eyes on this heart, awakening it to the truth and turning it into a receptive heart that He can fill with His love. Moreover, He makes it His own heart. Such is our Father!
