“If the truth is a scandal, let the scandal be produced and the truth be told” (St Ambrose).
The supreme good of truth can never be sacrificed for the sake of a false unity. In fact, it would only be an apparent unity that could not last. It would be like pretending to live in communion and peace with our Father and at the same time despising His commandments and not striving to keep them. This can be applied to many areas and we would always come to the same conclusion: truth is such a high good that we must submit to it. God Himself is the truth and can never act without it.
Some time ago I read the testimony of a man who, as a teenager, was clinically dead for a short time and was given the grace to see something of eternity. Some of his statements made a deep impression on me. For example, he described that in heaven there would be no discussions or disputes. Everything would be so obvious to everyone, and everyone would be so aware of the truth. What a wonderful state!
St Ambrose goes so far as to say that the truth is so important that it cannot be omitted, even if it is a scandal to some. Certainly this sentence can shed light on the present situation of the Church. As Catholics we have received the great treasure of truth. It is not the fruit of our own reflections, nor does it belong to us. If today it has become a scandal to testify that Jesus is the only way to the Heavenly Father and that the Catholic Church is the true Church, let the scandal be produced and the truth be told!
