THE LOVE OF GOD PRECEDES US

‘If the soul seeks God, much more does her Beloved seek her’ (St. John of the Cross).

We must always be attentive to the Lord and seek Him in everything. This is the language of love, and it is God Himself who invites us to do so: “Seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you!” (Mt 7:7). If we follow the inner invitation of our Father, our soul will have set out on the path prepared for her. “Our heart is restless until it rests in you”, exclaimed Saint Augustine, whose deep search for God we know from his Confessions.

When we seek Him, the Lord Himself comes to meet us, and we will always see that He loved us first, and that it was His love that inflamed our soul. Perhaps we do not notice it immediately because we have yet to know better the love of God, tender, delicate and rather spiritual, that attracts our soul. It is this love that has touched the soul to move towards Him. Of course, we have also experienced how God spoils us by giving us earthly delights. But the gain of spiritual goods is incomparably greater, and that is why we can never be satisfied with earthly pleasures.

Our Father seeks us and wants to fill us first and foremost with heavenly goods. He leaves no stone unturned to free the soul from her sins and entanglements and to open her inner eyes to see His goodness.

The more we seek God, the more we will realise how much He seeks us. This realisation will inflame our love for Him even more. Since God Himself is love, and love is infinite, it will never be exhausted. Our capacity to receive it during our earthly life is limited, but in eternity, when we will be with God and His own forever, it will have no limits.
