THE GREAT WEAKNESS OF GOD

131st Meditation

“Humanity is my great weakness. Therefore you must go in search of them with the same love with which I go in search of them” (Interior Word).

Let us try to understand these words… The love of our Father for us is almost incomprehensible to us. A bishop of Italy, Bishop Salvatore Bocciacco (1938-2008), made the following prayer his own:

“God is my Papa. He loves me to the point of madness. He does wonderful things for me. I trust in Him and I give myself completely to Him. So, I want to believe that whatever happens, whether it seems beautiful or terrible to me, it is an exquisite and tender expression of His love for me, and so I say, ‘Thank you Papa!'”

Love to the point of madness! These were the only words the author of this prayer could find to describe the incomprehensibility of God’s love. Is it still incomprehensible to us? If we come to know God’s being better, if we understand His love from within and allow ourselves to be filled by it, certainly not. When our shadows give way, being dispelled by the very love of the Father, we begin to see; not only with external eyes, but with the eyes of God Himself.

Our Father looks upon us with a love that far surpasses our capacity. Again and again He is willing to overlook our faults and offers us His hand. Thus we understand a little of the “weakness of love” that He has for us.

Indeed, He has us imprinted in His Heart and we live in Him, so that if He were to turn against us, He would turn against His own Heart. It is precisely this love that our Father wants to instill in us, so that we may learn to love others as He loves them.

“Yes, Father, we want to love like this. But we will only achieve it through your love. For us it is impossible, but for you everything is possible. That is why we ask for your love, that we may love as you love.”
