THE GOLD-WOVEN ROBES

“Hear, O daughter, consider, and incline your ear; forget your people and your father’s house; and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him” (Ps 45:10-11).

Behold the call of the Heavenly King to give Him our undivided love! These verses express the Father’s longing for the human soul, whom He wants to make a queen in His Kingdom of Love, if only she will incline her ear, listen to His call, and leave everything behind to follow the Lord. Then the soul receives her highest dignity from the hand of the heavenly King: she is “decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes; in many-colored robes she is led to the king” (vs. 14a).

It is not difficult to put this wonderful verse into the mouth of the Holy Spirit, who moves us to follow our heavenly vocation and wants to adorn our soul with the virtues and fruits of the Spirit. What a glorious robe the soul will then receive, a garment washed in the blood of the Lamb and woven of gold! How much will the Heavenly Father and King delight in such a soul and unite Himself with her!

Listening to these verses, it is not difficult to think of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Did she not perfectly follow the call of the Heavenly King? Did she not incline her ear? Was she not adorned with glory and honor by becoming the Daughter of God the Father, the Mother of the Son, and the Spouse of the Holy Spirit? No doubt she did!

May she help us to bow down as she did before our most noble Father and Lord and to serve Him without reserve.
