“The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable” (Rom 11:29).
Unlike the promises we humans make, which are often so changeable, God’s promises are irrevocable. Our Father is characterised precisely by His unwavering faithfulness and love. It would be contrary to His nature to change His plans or even to revoke them. Because our Father is omniscient, He sees everything at all times, and no event can “surprise” Him. Therefore, God’s promises are rock solid.
This applies to the promises made to mankind as a whole, to the nations, and to each individual person.
How our Father deals with the freedom He has given His rational creatures as a great good is another matter. Angels and men could and can abuse their freedom. The angels, including those who rebelled against God, have already passed the test of His love and faithfulness and have made their irrevocable choice; it is different with us men.
Our Father accompanies human beings who are now living on earth. If they abuse their freedom and close themselves off from God’s loving invitation, He will continue to do everything possible to help them rediscover their vocation to live as children of God and thus reach eternity with Him. This struggle continues until the hour of death, so that grace can still reach them.
But it does not correspond to their deepest vocation to be converted only at the moment of death. Even if God continues to hold on to this vocation, man can fail in this vocation or fulfil it inadequately. Then something remains unfulfilled, something that God will deal with in His wisdom and mercy.
We are called, therefore, to respond to His invitation and, with His grace, to do everything in our power to respond fully to our vocation.
