“Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (Jas 1:17).
How comforting it is for us human beings to know that every good gift comes from our Father, the ‘Father of lights’, and that He has many more in store for us! When we hear the expression “Father of lights”, it seems as if the whole starry sky, so far away, comes closer to us and joins us in our creatureliness, or rather allows us to discover in it the Heavenly Father.
It is also comforting to know that there is no change in God, that He is and always will be the same loving Father for us human beings, who are often immersed in a world that is subject to so many changes.
It is also comforting to know that there is no shadow in God, but that our Father is and will remain the true light that illuminates the world.
It is therefore consistent to build our whole life on this foundation, for there can be no better.
In the book of the prophet Isaiah, the Lord says: “The heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die like gnats; but my salvation will be for ever, and my deliverance will never be ended” (Isa 51:6).
Our Father reminds us again and again to trust Him firmly, without reservation or hesitation. This is what He wants us to understand and what He wants us to do.
In this way, our Father will be able to consolidate us in Him, so that the turbulent times will not shake us like a “reed shaken by the wind”, but will find us firmly rooted in the “Father of lights”.
