“Our angel’s desire to help us is much greater than our desire to let him help us” (St. John Bosco).
In his infinite goodness, our Heavenly Father grants us a reliable friend and lifelong companion. It is a great joy for our guardian angel to accompany us, because on the one hand this service allows him to show his love for God, whose command he fulfills, and on the other hand he can offer us his love through his help and fraternal closeness.
Here, too, the providential love of our Father is revealed, for he knows very well how many dangers lie in wait for us on our pilgrimage through this world and how important it is to have someone we can trust at our side. Yet it is often we who are unaware of his company and perhaps only notice it when we have been saved from misfortune.
How, then, can we come to know our guardian angel better? Let us remember that he loves us and wants to show us his love. Isn’t it the same on the human level? When we know that we can help someone—especially in those areas where he cannot help himself—don’t we naturally want to offer him our caring love?
However, the assistance of our guardian angel is not limited to the natural level; above all, he helps us on our journey toward God.
Something our heavenly friend certainly desires is that we experience even more of our Father’s love through him. Therefore, let us try to cultivate friendship with him, for it will surely last for eternity. The angel will be grateful for having been able to help us, and we will be grateful for having received his help. And together we will praise our Heavenly Father for it!
