254th Meditation
“How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” (Rom 11:33b).
How often do we understand only later what our Father has done and permitted for our good!
Indeed, God’s ways are not simply laid out before our eyes like an open book, in which we can read everything in detail and find it meticulously traced out. However, there is a “divine plan” for each of us.
In his book “Yes, Father”, Richard Gräf writes:
“Even before the Creation of the world (cf. Jn 17:24), God the Father had mapped out the whole plan for my life, down to the finest, smallest and last detail. Not a hair falls from your head without your Father knowing it (cf. Mt 10:29-30). He has laid out the plan of my life with such dedication and care, that it would seem that from all eternity He has been concerned only with me, so that, as I assume the place assigned to me in the universe, with the talents entrusted to me, His glory might be revealed to the best of my ability”.
Let us recall in this context the words of St. Paul to the Ephesians, “We are God’s work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has already designated to make up our way of life” (Eph 2:10).
The Father allows us to discover His plan for us. Once, by His grace, we have come out of sin and confusion and have passed through the “narrow gate” (Mt 7:14), His plan can unfold fruitfully every day. God’s plans do not remain totally obscure to us, but we can always discover that aspect which is necessary for the next step to be taken. Sometimes the Lord shows us something more, to our delight and responsibility.
What we are allowed to know is so great that it is enough for us to continue our journey in peace, hand in hand with God, noting with gratitude that we have found the clue to realise what the Father wants of us. In this way, we can move forward into the future with confidence and be attentive to all that the Father will still allow us to discover.
On this day we ask Him: “Dear Father, what is it that You have foreseen from all eternity for today? Let me discover it and realise it.”
