“Live in the certainty of God’s love and you will be able to love yourself” (Inner Word).
As we all know, the demands of love are very high. Our human love falls short and is not nearly enough to correspond to the divine love. When we consider Jesus’ exhortation to love our enemies, we come up against the invincible limits of our human capacity. But it is not only the love of enemies that far exceeds our capacity. All the corruption of this world, with its often so misguided people, can only be remedied by the merciful love of our Heavenly Father reaching down to us human beings.
But how can we learn to love like our Father, how can we grow in love far beyond our human capacity and become instruments of the Father’s love? In other words: How can our Father’s love use us to reach people?
The first sentence of today’s meditation gives us an answer: It is a matter of living in the certainty of our Father’s love. His love wants to become the solid foundation of our lives and grow day by day. He wants us, as soon as we wake up, to let it enter and remain in our hearts, recognizing it as wisdom. He wants to accompany us throughout the day and descend into all our depths. He wants to watch over us at night.
The love of our Father wants to fill us to the point that it will naturally rule our lives and inflame us to the point that it will become the criterion by which we measure everything we do and plan.
In this way, it will be the Holy Spirit Himself who will reign in us and make us capable of loving others with God’s love.
