249th Meditation
“Despatch her [wisdom] from the holy heavens,
send her forth from your throne of glory
to help me and to toil with me
and teach me what is pleasing to you” (Wis 9:10).
Day by day we should make this prayer of Solomon our own, so that we can better recognise what pleases God.
Wisdom reveals her Will to us and makes it palatable to us. In fact, Jesus tells us that His food is to do the Will of the Father (Jn 4:34), and this will always be good food, even when He allows suffering and persecution to befall us. It is this wisdom that impels us to adhere our will to God’s will, and not only makes suffering bearable, but gives it a deep meaning. Whoever has gone through the school of suffering sustained by God’s grace, will no longer want to miss out on its fruits. Thus even the bitter food of suffering becomes tasty for him. This is the work of the Father!
The Father, together with the Son, sends us from heaven the Holy Spirit, the Lord of angels, so that He may accompany us throughout our earthly life and help us and toil with us.
The Holy Spirit is our divine Friend and Teacher. Unlike the angels, He does not share with us the condition of a creature, but possesses the divine nature. Nothing is hidden from Him; He pierces everything with His light; He fills us with His gifts and toils with us, sharing all our labours.
The Paraclete is the unfathomable gift of the Father and the Son, who do not leave us orphans (Jn 14:18) and grant us everything we need to complete our pilgrimage through this world and arrive safely at the goal. The Holy Spirit teaches us what the Will of the Heavenly Father is. With Him as our guide, we will not go astray, for He reminds us of all that Jesus said and did (cf. Jn 14:26).
