“Great opportunities to serve God are rare; small ones, on the other hand, are constantly presented to us” (St. Francis de Sales).
The desire to show our love for our Heavenly Father through great deeds can be deeply rooted in our hearts. In principle, our Father will not deny us opportunities to do so. But daily life offers us countless occasions to serve our Father in small ways and thus show Him our love. With God’s grace, these small acts will add up to a great treasure that we can carry with us into eternity. Whatever we have done out of love for our Heavenly Father will never be forgotten, but will be stored like gold in His treasure chamber and will bring us into great nearness to our Most High Lord in eternity.
The more attentive we are to opportunities to serve the Lord and the more awakened we become to love, the more God’s grace will strengthen us. In this way, through small acts, we become more capable of performing the great acts of love when the opportunity arises: for example, bearing witness to the Lord even when we are rejected, and even giving our lives for Him.
By being attentive to the small occasions to serve the Father, our lives will become brighter and more agile. The opportunities are always there: whether it is showing our love for God in prayer, whether it is interceding for others in our prayers and caring for them in deeds, whether it is being responsible stewards of the treasures entrusted to us, whether it is working on our own hearts to fill them more with love, whether it is the willingness not to evade trials, among many other things… All these are precious opportunities that our Father offers us to make our lives fruitful. It is a joy for Him to see us burning with love!
