“There is no better way to honor God, our Father, than through boundless trust” (St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori).
Boundless trust honors our Father in a special way, as St. Alphonsus Maria affirms. In fact, the saint is convinced that there is no better way to honor Him.
What does he mean? Let us remember that, as a result of the devil’s seduction, the relationship of trust between God and man was deeply disturbed. After falling into sin, Adam and Eve hid from God, once the seducer had questioned His loving authority over them: “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” (Gen 3:1). We know how the story continued!
But what became of that broken trust? The devil continued to work tirelessly to convey a false image of God to humanity. And, unfortunately, he has succeeded. At times, he has even managed to distort the true image of a loving God and present it as its opposite.
However, our Father’s great desire is that we trust Him. He assures us of this in the message to Sister Eugenia Ravasio: “With regard to the means of honoring Me as I desire, all I ask of you is great confidence. (…) My dearest wish is that you behave as My children, simply and trusting in Me!”
If we trust in God, we will never doubt His goodness, and thus we will penetrate the depths of His being. Unlimited trust will sustain us in the most difficult trials and dead-end roads, and will bear witness to an invincible love.
Then the lost trust will have been rebuilt. It will not have the radiance of paradisiacal innocence, but it will bear the marks of the victory of love in the midst of darkness—and that will honor our heavenly Father in an unparalleled way!
