“One finds that one never loves enough. Yes, it’s true: one never loves enough!” (Charles de Foucauld).
This is true because love is infinite and can only be found in its perfection in God.
It is very helpful when we realize that we never love enough without falling into destructive self-doubt. This realization leads to valuable self-knowledge because we set out on the path to the source of love. We begin to desire it more and more. In doing so, we encounter the limitations of our hearts. These limitations hurt us now, and we suffer because we do not yet love as we could.
What should we do? First, we must carry out an act of will and not resign ourselves to having a narrow, closed heart. This requires humility.
We are far from loving enough! We cannot love the way the Gospel calls us to on our own.
This leads us to ask our Father for His love. Not just once, but whenever we reach our limits and beyond. Without a doubt, God will answer this request with joy.
And what about us? We bring everything that does not correspond to love in our hearts to our Father with perseverance. By doing so, we ask God to help us recognize where we still refuse to love and evade its demands.
In this way, love becomes the theme. Our longing for a new heart grows—for a heart that can love like God. May our Father take the heart of stone from our breast and give us a new heart.
This will transform us. We will become more capable of loving. It will be easier for us and we will no longer have to force ourselves to do so. Nevertheless, we still feel that we never love enough. “Yes, that’s true—we never love enough!” But this doesn’t make us sad. It’s an invitation to grow in love.
