“The great work of Christ was to make the Father known” (St Hilary of Poitiers).
Did the Lord achieve this? In the Gospel of John we see all the efforts of Jesus to make it clear to the Jews that the Father had sent Him, that He spoke in His name, that He only said what He heard the Father say and did what He was told to do. Jesus never tires of attributing to the Father the abundant signs that He performs, because it is the Father who acts through Him, and He wants to glorify Him, because He does not seek His own glory, but that of the Father.
But it is not easy for Jesus because He often finds Himself in front of closed hearts that know neither Him nor the Father, whose presence is evident in everything the Lord does and says.
Over the centuries, many people have come to know the Lord, to believe in Him and, as Jesus assured Philip, to see the Father through Him (Jn 14:9).
We can learn more and more about Jesus’ desire to glorify the Father through everything He does. The Father is His great love and to do his will is His food.
We can therefore agree with St Hilary. Jesus did everything to make the Father known. The question is whether people are aware that a loving Father wants to live with them in the most intimate communion and make them sharers in His treasures.
In the message to Sister Eugenia Ravasio, our Heavenly Father shows us that He wants to be known, honoured and loved by men, who often still have a false or imperfect image of Him.
The task is not yet finished, and we who follow Christ are called to do what He did: to make the Father known as He really is, in order to draw His blessing upon humanity.
