“God has as much room on earth as man grants Him.” (Meister Eckhart)
Indeed, the extent to which our Father can be present in our lives and rule over them depends on us. Is our life with God, or even in God? We know that our Father wants to conquer our heart and does not coerce us in any way; he knocks at our door, and does not open it by force (cf. Rev 3:20).
Once again, we see the freedom with which God has endowed human beings. Love does not tolerate coercion, and no one abides by this truth more than God himself. It is moving to observe how the Lord waits day after day, hour after hour, until man lets Him in and turns to Him. With every slightest opening, our Father is ready to give in abundance and even thanks the person for letting Him in, when in fact this is the most natural thing to do.
But what happens when a person opens his heart wide to God and unconditionally accepts His presence? Unimaginable torrents of grace can flood him, and God’s caresses can overflow him. The Lord can then establish His sanctuary in that soul and remain there permanently as long as the soul does not reject Him.
Then, we live not only with God but also in God. His presence permeates every part of our soul, filling it with His love. We have made room for Him! The more people do this, the greater God’s presence on earth will be, and true peace can come.
It is not difficult because it is simply what God, in his goodness, created us to do: what is most natural and essential. What could be more natural than giving our hearts to the One who gave Himself for us?
