LISTEN TO HIM

340th Meditation

“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to Him” (Mt 17:5).

Our Father gives us this instruction on Mount Tabor, during the Transfiguration of Jesus, addressing in the first instance the 3 disciples who accompanied Jesus at that moment. They were able to experience the glorious Transfiguration of the Lord, and we know how awed Peter was when he saw that Moses and Elijah, the representatives of the Law and the Prophets, also appeared. What a fullness! Certainly the disciples could hardly believe their eyes.

In this context, the Heavenly Father gave them this command that will always remain in force, both for them and for the whole of humanity: “Listen to Him”, listen to my beloved Son. These words are very much in consonance with the instruction that the Virgin Mary gave to the servants at the wedding feast of Cana: “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5).

The Heavenly Father and the Virgin Mary, Mother of His beloved Son, point us to Jesus. In Him is all wisdom and knowledge (cf. Col 2:3). Moses and Elijah prepared their ways, and now they step back.

The account of the Transfiguration describes very aptly:

“When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces, overcome with fear. But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, ‘Stand up, do not be afraid.’ And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus” (Mt 17:6-8).

This is how our Heavenly Father arranged it: when we listen to Jesus and do what He tells us, we live in perfect union with Him. When other people also begin to do so, that unity that only God can give and preserve is generated.

“May they all be one, just as, Father, you are in me and I am in you” (Jn 17:21), Jesus asks the Father in His farewell discourse.

Everything has been given to us in Jesus. May the Holy Spirit enlighten us especially in these days, so that we may understand the Son of God even more deeply, listen to Him promptly and carry out with great fervor what He entrusts to us. In this way we glorify the Father and serve mankind.
