“Listen attentively to the voice of the Heart of God. This is more important than reading many things” (Inner Word).
Here is an invitation from our Heavenly Father to deepen our spiritual life, because every word that we hear from the Lord and that we move in our heart is capable of enlightening our soul, giving it orientation and strengthening the bond of love.
In fact, reading too much (which certainly alludes to excessive reading) tends to bind us to the mental dimension. It is similar to an excess of speech, which easily distracts us and leaves the soul hungry. Moreover, it often prevents communication from becoming deeper.
“Listen to the voice of God’s heart” is a wonderful invitation that reminds us of the example of Martha and Mary in the Gospel: the best option is to sit at His feet and listen to Him (Lk 10:42).
What will we hear in the heart of God if we accept this invitation? It will always be a message of love, and our Father will draw us to Himself. Our inner being will be centered on God and our heart will become more and more familiar with its Father and Creator. What our Father has to say to us is much more important than what we can read or speak. We must learn to read His Heart. The deeper our friendship with Him becomes, the more He will communicate His desires to us and encourage and strengthen us to fulfill them.
The mystics of our Church speak of the mystery of love, which is communicated to us through contemplation. Listening attentively to the voice of God’s Heart is part of this mystery in which our Father communicates Himself to us in silence. It is this holy silence that draws us out of our often scattered lives. Let us try to follow this invitation, it will be very fruitful!
