LIKE THE SON OF GOD

“Anoint people with mercy and consolation as the Son of God did” (St. Hildegard of Bingen).

What a beautiful task is entrusted to us Christians: to resemble the Lord in such a way that, when they meet us, men have at least an idea of what He is like! When I see how sacred music opens people’s hearts, penetrating them with its beauty and drawing them to the love of our Father, I think how wonderful it would be if we allowed the Holy Spirit to transform us into sacred music.

Only the Holy Spirit can do this, dissolving our hardness, transforming our disharmony into harmony, converting our obstinacy into a listening attitude, and our self-centeredness into openness, making of us new men. Then the “heavenly man” awakens in us, formed in the image of Jesus Christ, bearing His gentleness and mercy and capable of transmitting the consolation that only the Holy Spirit can give.

Perhaps, in this way, we can embody what St. Hildegard of Bingen expresses in her wonderful exhortation: “Be sun with your doctrine; be moon with your adaptability; be wind with your firm guidance; be breeze with your gentleness; be fire through the beauty of your teaching.”

It is said of St. Francis of Assisi that he was “another Christ.” However, this call extends to all of us who follow the Lord. He wants to reach people through us. St. Hildegard refers to this, and it is possible for each of us to do so in our own way, just as the Father intended! Just imagine how much glory we will give to God and how much comfort we will be able to provide people!
