“There is no better measure of love than trust” (Meister Eckhart).
The more we trust God, the more we love Him. We can understand this measure well and use it to examine the state of our love. The same can be said in reverse: the less we trust, the less love has triumphed in us. If there is even mistrust in our heart, it is a sign that our heart is closed and our relationship with our Heavenly Father has darkened.
Trust can be learned through concrete acts of trust. One way to grow in it is to remember again and again all that God does for us and how often He has heard our prayers, and never forget to thank Him. If we make a conscious effort to do this, we will find it easier to remember how often the Lord protects us and blesses our lives. It can also help us to meditate on those passages in Scripture that invite us to trust in God.
When faced with new situations beyond our control, we should express our trust in the Lord and ask Him to increase it. In this way greater trust will grow, and consequently greater love.
It is even more helpful to be aware of the trust that God places in us. How many things He entrusts to us: life and freedom, He allows us to approach the Lord’s Table, He entrusts children to parents, the Holy Sacraments to priests, He grants us the gift of understanding and perhaps a religious vocation, among many other things.
We then understand that it is His love that gives us everything, and that even (God forbid!) we can abuse it. So our trust in God will be kindled by seeing His trust in us. This is a holy path!
