GOD’S BELOVED FOREVER

“Oh, my good Lord, if only my soul could be called Your beloved” (Blessed Henry Suso).

In these words from the German mystic, we hear the longing of a soul that loves God. This longing has become so intense that it begs for the most intimate union with God. It is the desire of souls who have begun to love the Lord and recognize, in the light of this love, that they can and want to love Him more. Thus, this longing arises from the depths of the heart.

And what about our Father?

He is greatly pleased by such a desire because it was He who inflamed our hearts with His love. At the moment of our creation, He planted this love within us so that we might live by it and long for it. When a person awakens from the lethargy of forgetting God and being indifferent to Him, which envelops them like a dense fog or a layer of ice, their soul becomes still and can rest in the Father’s heart.

This is what happened to the blessed Dominican whose words accompany us today. Without a doubt, his soul had already become the “beloved of God” when he uttered this profound sigh because the Father draws those souls who love and seek Him to Himself. Once the heart is inflamed with God’s love, it is at peace for finding the One it loves. However, its love is infinite and will not be satisfied with reaching a certain point, saying, “This is enough.” The soul longs for infinity and to be as close as possible to God forever. It wants to be “beloved by God” forever. Our Father will look upon it with pleasure and assign it the place He has always prepared for it.
