“FULFILLING THE MISSION FIRST”

“God must be served first.” (St. Joan of Arc)

These are the words of St. Joan of Arc—words she followed even in the midst of great distress, when the unjust judges in her ecclesiastical trial sought to corner her and lead her into contradictions. Her death was a foregone conclusion for her judges, just as it was for our Lord Jesus.

Yet no one had reckoned with the spiritual resistance that was interpreted as obstinacy on Jeanne’s part.

How is it, dear Father, that this daughter of Yours did not break under the cunning and malice of her enemies, who seemed so far superior to her theologically and intellectually?

Your words above provide the answer. She relied on You and not on her own strength. She looked to You first. Serving You—and thus fulfilling her mission—came first. How could You not stand by her then? How could You not give her the Spirit of strength? You supported her, and through her mouth You gave answers that should have convinced her accusers.

This is how it is when one loves You with all one’s heart, lives in the truth, and prefers nothing above You. No power in the world or of evil can overcome those who love You. You are their protection; You dwell in the hearts of Your faithful.

The more we follow the words of this Virgin, the more You can work through us as well. You were very pleased with how Your daughter Jeanne held fast to her mission, trusting in You. Today she is with You as a victor and shines in all Your beauty.

Her example still shines upon the earth and teaches us that we must always serve You first.

Holy Virgin of Orléans, pray for us!
