FAITHFULNESS IN SMALL THINGS

“Remain faithful and attentive to me even in the smallest things. This will strengthen your power!” (Interior word)

We know the invitation to remain faithful even in the smallest things, and we also know this from our natural lives. This does not mean a sterile meticulousness that makes life narrow and legalistic, but rather an attentiveness born of love. We can learn this from our Heavenly Father. Is it not true that He has considered everything down to the smallest detail? Let us delight in the meticulous care of his creation, which has left nothing out in reflecting His wisdom.

Our Father also desires this loving care and attention from us, for He has entrusted us with the little things just as much as the great ones. They testify to His love, and when we handle them as our Father does, His loving care sinks into us and is reflected in our lives. This does not primarily mean external perfection, even though we may strive for it without slipping into a perfectionism that makes everything cold.

The crucial point is the love with which we do all that is entrusted to us and continue to do so faithfully. This will give us strength, for it is love that empowers us. Under its guidance, it shapes everything we do according to the image of God—whether in small or great things. In a certain sense, we then share in God’s creative power, and everything we do becomes a spiritual work of art, for everything comes from our Father. Our abilities are put to use and, under the guidance of love, bear their greatest fruit.
