“II have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” (Jer 31:3).
This is the love of which the people of Israel lived. Time and again, they were able to experience the faithfulness and compassion of their Heavenly Father. It was this love that moved Him to send His own Son as Saviour for His people, so that He might reveal His love to them and make it fruitful. By sending the Holy Spirit, He brought everything to fulfilment so that God’s eternal love might be proclaimed to all humanity.
Mercy and faithfulness! They pour out constantly from our Father’s heart towards us to awaken us, melt the ice around our hearts and find their way into the innermost depths of our being.
Even if we forget our Father, squandering our capacity to love on the things of this world, or even offend His eternal love with our sins, God cannot and will not do anything other than offer us His love again and again. How He desires that our lives bear fruit a hundredfold, that we rush out in search of souls as messengers of His divine love, that we forget what lies behind and press on toward what lies ahead (Phil 3:13)! What prevents us from leaving everything behind to follow His love? What holds us back? Time in this world is short; eternity is infinite…
Eternal love knocks at the door of our hearts. It will never stop, simply because it loves. Although i thanks us even for the smallest things we do and rewards us with a royal reward, it continues to wait to possess our hearts completely, so that eternal love may find rest and correspondence in us.
