“The Holy Spirit does not tolerate delay; He demands immediate obedience to His motions” (St. Francis de Sales).
Our Father has given us a wonderful gift by sending us the Holy Spirit, who on the one hand promotes the evangelisation of this world and on the other hand sanctifies us. He works in us as the “compelling love”, as we can understand from the words of St. Francis de Sales. Once the Holy Spirit has taken the reins of our lives (after having struggled for a long time to get us to hand them over to Him), He will want us to follow His instructions promptly.
Perhaps we can imagine the holy angels willingly, immediately and totally obeying the will of God without delay. This is the disposition that the Holy Spirit wants to awaken in us human beings so that, although we are subject to the limitations of our human nature, we can obey Him with great agility and promptness.
If we understand that the Holy Spirit is the love between the Father and the Son, we know that His intention is always to make us grow in love and thus become more and more like the Lord, as well as to help us better fulfil the mission entrusted to us.
And it is always a noble goal: the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
It is not uncommon for laziness to get in the way and cause a certain immobility. The Holy Spirit, with our cooperation, will work to overcome this, as well as all other obstacles, so that we can follow His movements more directly and therefore more quickly, because time is pressing.
Although our Heavenly Father waits for us with infinite patience, He would always prefer that we obey His will promptly. And the Holy Spirit, the ‘compelling love’ in us, desires nothing else. If each day we make a little progress in obedience to Him, it will become easier and easier to do the works of our Father, for love will have grown.
