“Can there be anyone more generous than You when it comes to giving, if only You find someone to receive? Who repays more generously than You for the services rendered to You?” (Saint Teresa of Avila)
In unison with Saint Teresa, we answer: No one! These words reflect her gratitude for the Lord’s love and generosity, as well as her sorrow that people do not sufficiently welcome the graces offered to them. She emphasized this again and again to her sisters in relation to the interior journey, stressing that we cannot even imagine all that the Lord wants to give us if we are willing to undergo the process of transformation in Christ.
It is true: God’s generosity and the gift of His love can only be hindered by ourselves—when we tie our capacity to love to passing things and, above all, when we continue to revolve around our own selves.
We can only escape this self-centeredness if we fix our gaze on God, if we speak sincerely with Him, if we ask for His grace, and if we are willing to submit to His guidance. Then it will no longer be merely a request on our part to receive as much as we can, but we will also give the Lord the opportunity to find a recipient willing to welcome the love He wants to give—a soul willing to enter into a nuptial covenant with Christ. Once divine love touches us, our love is ignited. If this love is true, then, as St. Teresa says, we will have only one concern: to please our Father.
The saint adds: “Man then dies of the desire to be loved by You and consumes his life in the longing to love You more.”
If this happens, our Father will have found someone to receive His love.
