AN INCOMPARABLE LOVE

“Who loves us more than the Heavenly Father? No one” (Inner Word).

We human beings are fundamentally dependent on love. It was love that called us into existence, it is our life and it perfects us. That is why we are always looking for love. A life without love is difficult, almost unbearable, and finally withers away.

Even if we have not had the joy of finding that love in our home or in the people around us that would give us the fundamental ‘yes’, the unconditional acceptance of our existence that would sustain us, we must not fall into despair or see our lives as meaningless or unwanted.

It was our Heavenly Father who pronounced the great ‘yes’ to our lives and He never withdraws it. His invitation to come home always stands, even when we have fallen into sin and confusion; our Father is always looking for us and does not turn away; day after day he assures us of His love and tries to make us see it. However, today’s sentence is not only addressed to those who have received little or no love on the human level. It is also addressed to those who are thirsty for great love, but look for it in other people. Often they will be disappointed, because even in the best person they will not find what only God can give them.

That is why it is good to take these words to heart and deeply internalise them: No one can love us more than our Heavenly Father. Therefore, it is only logical that we look to God alone for that love which is perfect and endures forever. As Jesus said: “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst” (Jn 6:35).

When we have fully understood and assimilated this, we will no longer expect from other people what only God can give us.
