A POEM FOR THE KING

“My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my verses to the king” (Ps 45:1).

What news can gladden the heart more than the news that our Father loves us infinitely? What news can be more important for humanity than the good news of the Gospel? What news on earth can make the heart overflow with joy more than to live in the truth and to be on the way to the eternal home?

There is no greater, more important, more true news… This is the message that goes through the whole earth and reaches to the end of the world (Ps 19:4)!

The author of this Psalm lived it, and his whole poem becomes a praise to the glory of God, even though he had not yet known the coming of the Son of God into the world. The Spirit of the Lord rejoiced in him and filled his heart.

Is it not true that the knowledge of God and all that He does should fill our hearts with constant joy and gladness? “Rejoice in the Lord always” the Apostle Paul exhorts us (Phil 4:4).

And from this joy is born a beautiful poem, a wonderful expression of joy and praise. The soul never tires of blessing the Lord and seeks every possible expression to express its joy.

The greatest and most beautiful poem the soul can recite before the King is her trusting surrender to the Heavenly Father and her response to His love. Then she realises that she has been invited to the King’s wedding feast and understands that these words are addressed to her personally:

“Hear, O daughter, consider, and incline your ear; forget your people and your father’s house; and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him” (Ps 45:10-11).

And your joy will be full when you reach the eternal home of the Father, where Jesus has prepared a dwelling for us (Jn 14:2). Then our joy will know no shadow, and our heart will dwell in God forever.
