Aspects of the Lord’s Prayer

Lk 11:1-4

He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation.”

The Lord’s Prayer, prayed today wherever Christians are present in the world, gives us a unique access to God and unites us as children of the same Father.

Our Lady of the Rosary

After concluding the series on the Letters of St. John, we return today to our usual daily meditation framework, following the liturgical calendar. Today, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The origin of this feast is as follows:

In the 14th century, the Ottomans conquered much of the Balkans. Constantinople fell in 1453, the Near East was subjugated at the beginning of the 16th century, the Turks besieged Vienna in 1529, and Cyprus fell in 1571. Crete was also threatened, and Europe was at risk of being Islamized. Pope Pius V managed to unite the Spaniards and the Venetians in a defensive alliance.

Conclusion of the Johannine Letters

3 Jn 1:1-15

The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in health; I know that it is well with your soul. For I greatly rejoiced when some of the brethren arrived and testified to the truth of your life, as indeed you do follow the truth. No greater joy can I have than this, to hear that my children follow the truth. Beloved, it is a loyal thing you do when you render any service to the brethren, especially to strangers, who have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey as befits God’s service. For they have set out for his sake and have accepted nothing from the heathen.

LET ME BE YOUR STRENGTH

“Let me be your strength” (Inner Word).

It is true that our human weakness leads us again and again into situations that we can hardly—or not at all—overcome. This applies to the outer life as well as to the inner life, which can also bring us stages of darkness that are part of the process of purification of the soul. In such situations, we often do not know what to do, and we are confronted with our smallness and shortcomings. It is then that we must call upon the Lord, and He will answer us: “Let me be your strength.” Read More

Beware of heretics!

2 Jn 1:1-13

The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth, because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us for ever: Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love. I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children following the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father. And now I beg you, lady, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we follow his commandments; this is the commandment, as you have heard from the beginning, that you follow love.

The evil one does not touch those born of God

1 Jn 5:14-21

And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal. We know that any one born of God does not sin, but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Read More
