THE PATH TO SELFLESS LOVE

“Since man’s creation, I have never for one moment stopped living beside him. As his Creator and Father, I feel the need to love him” (Father’s message to Sister Eugenia Ravasio).

Let us deeply understand the extent to which the Father loves us, with total selflessness. God does not need us for Himself, because He is perfect in Himself and lacks nothing. This is how He describes it in His message to Sister Eugenia: “It is not that I need him, but My love, as Father and Creator, makes Me feel this need to love man”.

We have always been desired by our Father:

He says in the Message to mother Eugenia: “I am the Eternal One, and when I was alone, I had already thought of using all My power to create beings in My image”. Sacred Scripture testifies in Psalm 139: “My frame was not hidden from thee, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth. Thy eyes beheld my unformed substance” (v. 15-16a).

The assurance of the love that the Lord offers us, knowing that we have always been wanted and loved by Him, knowing that He has provided a different path in life for each of us, can lift us up and heal our hearts deeply. Our value as persons, which comes to us from God Himself – including the sacrifice of the Son of God, offered out of love for the Father and for us – gives us a glimpse of the infinite love with which our Father looks at us.

From this meditation on God’s love we can learn something else important for our spiritual life: the more we are sure of God’s love, the more we discover true freedom in Christ – “if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (Jn 8:36); “God alone is enough” (St Teresa of Avila) – the more we can apply this selfless love of God in our lives, serving Him and our neighbour without seeking our own convenience.
