248th Meditation
“They [the holy angels] will be your most faithful friends and will assist you in everything” (Inner Word).
Our Father not only accompanies us Himself and dwells in us, but He also sends His holy angels so that we may have fellowship with them. He wants them to be our companions and to be united with us in His love. We are to have true friendship with them and delight in these powerful helpers.
The angels burn with love for the Father. They are ready to carry out His holy Will at all times and without delay. In them we meet the Lord, and we see how involved they are in the plan of salvation. Think of the Archangel Gabriel, the herald who brought the proclamation to Our Lady; of St. Michael, who defends God’s honour and stands against the pride of Satan; of the guardian angels, who serve us with great joy; of the angelic choirs who announced the Good News to the shepherds in Bethlehem; of the many mighty angels described in the Book of Revelation….
They are all part of our family, for in God we are bound together. Precisely in these apocalyptic times, when we need reliable friends, we must rely above all on the heavenly Church.
And indeed, the holy angels are there to assist the Church militant and to convey God’s presence to her. It is up to us how close our relationship with them becomes. They are an immeasurable gift and are subject neither to human weakness nor to temptation, but are steadfast in the Lord for ever and never waver.
The angels too are creatures, who have had to prove their faithfulness. Therefore, they are friends who have passed the “fire proof” and fervent servants of our Father. We can trust them! They are so full of God that their very presence drives away the darkness.
They love everything that God loves, and they are always there when it comes to glorifying Him. Nothing is more important to them! When we withdraw to pray in silence or worship the Lord in the tabernacle, they are infinitely glad to be with us and delight in all that the Father does for us. They also delight in us when we try to reciprocate their love.
The holy angels are true friends and understand our love for God. What a gift from our Father!
